Parts of Northern and North Western Arizona and Southern Utah, Atlas Sheet No. 67 (Wheeler, 1873)
Atlas Sheet No. 67 of Lieutenant George M. Wheeler’s U.S. Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, from his expeditions of 1871–73, with J. W. Powell’s Colorado River survey worked in and the country south of the river between 112° and 113° taken from Ives’s 1858 map: the Colorado’s canyons from the Paria to below Diamond Creek, the Kanab, Paria and Kaibab plateaus, the Mormon towns of the Virgin valley and Kanab, and the Mormon wagon road from Lee’s Ferry to Moen Ava. It draws three trails named for Native peoples: the “Sheavwitz Trail” from Ives’s route north along the plateau west of Cataract Creek (Havasu Creek, in Havasupai country) to “Sheavwitz Crossing” of the Colorado, named for the Shivwits band of Southern Paiute; the “Trail to Moquis Pueblos” from Moen Ava (Moenave) east toward the Hopi towns; and “Navajo’s Trail” from Navajo Spring south-east below White Mesa toward the Navajo country. The plateau around Red Butte, south of the canyon, is not shown.

| Accuracy | About 11 km (RMS 0.6 km at 49 control points). Placed by hand in a map-queue session and approved by a person. If something sits in the wrong place, members can fix it with Fix placement on the map. |
| Method | Placed by hand: a thin-plate spline (lightly smoothed) through 21 crossings of the sheet’s own 30′ meridians and parallels (Greenwich longitudes, read off the engraved lines; 0.1 km RMS among themselves) and 28 places the map draws off its graticule — towns, springs, river mouths and confluences; 49 points in all. West of about 112° 15′ the drawing sits within 1–3 km of its graticule (St. George, the Virgin valley towns, Kanab, Pipe Spring); east of it the drawing runs 5–8 km east of the graticule (Lee’s Ferry, House Rock and Bitter springs, Moen Ava), so the crossings there are left out and the places carry the fit, and the Little Colorado above the Moenkopi is drawn on a more south-easterly course than it runs, up to 18 km east of it at the sheet’s south edge. The mouth of Cataract (Havasu) Creek, where Ives’s canyon meets Powell’s river, is drawn some 13 km south-west of where it is. The plateau around Red Butte, taken from Ives’s map and drawn some 23 km north-west of where it stands, is masked. See the methodology. |
