Kaʻū and Puna, Island of Hawaiʻi: the U.S. Geological Survey’s 1:62,500 quadrangles Ka Lae, Honuapo, Pahala, Kilauea, Puna, Kalapana and…
The Geological Survey’s first topographic maps of Kaʻū and Puna, joined into one sheet: the trails — many of them the old ala hele and the coastal ala loa — between the villages, landings, water holes and shelters, across the lava fields and through the Kaʻū Desert, with the land divisions and Hawaiian place names of the 1920s.

| Accuracy | About 3 km. Placed by hand in a map-queue session and approved by a person. If something sits in the wrong place, members can fix it with Fix placement on the map. |
| Method | Joined from seven georeferenced USGS GeoTIFFs: each quadrangle reprojected to longitude and latitude and cut at its neatline, then placed with the 89 corners of its 5′ grid (an exact fit). The sheets were drawn on the Old Hawaiian datum, so positions can differ from today’s by a few hundred metres. See the methodology. |
