Kona, Mauna Loa and Humuʻula, Island of Hawaiʻi: the U.S. Geological Survey’s 1:62,500 quadrangles Puako, Kailua, Honaunau, Hoopuloa…

The Geological Survey’s first topographic maps of the Kona coast, the saddle and the slopes of Mauna Loa, Hualālai and Mauna Kea, joined into one sheet: the coastal ala loa and the mauka trails between Kona, the saddle, Humuʻula and the summit of Mauna Loa, with the ahupuaʻa and Hawaiian place names of the 1920s.

RightsPublic domain. Published 1928 — before 1931, so public domain in the United States. Evidence
AccuracyAbout 3 km. Placed by hand in a map-queue session and approved by a person. If something sits in the wrong place, members can fix it with Fix placement on the map.
MethodJoined from seven georeferenced USGS GeoTIFFs: each quadrangle reprojected to longitude and latitude and cut at its neatline, then placed with the 85 corners of its 5′ grid (an exact fit). The sheets were drawn on the Old Hawaiian datum, so positions can differ from today’s by a few hundred metres. See the methodology.
