Herkimer County
The Mohawk at Herkimer and Little Falls; West Canada Creek; the valley trail on both banks.
The Mohawk trail entered Herkimer County along both banks of the river. The 1851 sheet draws West Canada Creek coming down from the north to join the Mohawk at Te-ah-o-ge, the Herkimer of today, and East Canada Creek (Ko-la-ne-ka) at the county’s eastern edge. Between them the river drops through the gorge at Little Falls, where boats were carried and later locked around the rapids.
German Flatts, the Palatine settlement on the south bank, and the Mohawk Upper Castle at Indian Castle on the south bank near Danube both lie on the trail’s line. Today NY-5 follows the north bank and NY-5S the south, with the Thruway and the Erie Canalway Trail in the valley floor between them.
