The Mohawk was the highway of the Confederacy’s eastern door. The 1851 sheet names the river Te-uge-ga and draws the trail on both banks from the carrying place at Rome (Da-ya-hoo-wa-quat) past Utica (Nun-da-da-sis), the West Canada Creek junction at Herkimer (Te-ah-o-ge), the falls at Little Falls, the Mohawk castles around Canajoharie and Fort Hunter, and Schenectady (Ska-neh-ta-de) to the Hudson at Cohoes.
The river junctions along this stretch are control points, so the overlay’s Mohawk sits on the modern river within a few kilometres for its whole length. NY-5 and NY-5S carry the two bank trails; the Thruway and the Erie Canalway Trail run the valley floor.
