The Schoharie mouth at Fort Hunter, the Mohawk castles, Canajoharie and Amsterdam on the valley trail.
Montgomery County holds the Mohawk Lower Castle at Fort Hunter, where Schoharie Creek (Sko-har-le on the sheet) meets the river, and the villages around Canajoharie and Fonda, the Caughnawaga of the seventeenth century. The trail ran along the river on both banks and the Schoharie trail branched south from Fort Hunter toward the Schoharie valley and the Catskills.
The 1851 sheet spreads the Mohawk nation’s name, Ca-ne-a-ga-o-no-ga, across this stretch. Today NY-5 (north bank), NY-5S (south bank), the Thruway and the Erie Canalway Trail all follow the valley; NY-30 climbs the Schoharie.
