Susquehanna and Chenango

The trails south from Oneida country down the Chenango to Binghamton, and from Otsego Lake down the Susquehanna to Sidney and the Great Bend.

From the Oneida and Onondaga country trails ran south to the Susquehanna. The 1851 sheet draws the Chenango (O-che-nang) from its headwaters near Morrisville down to Binghamton and names the junction O-che-nange; the Unadilla (De-o-na-dil-lo) and the Susquehanna from Otsego Lake (Ote-sa-ga) join at Sidney. The sheet labels the Delaware Ska-hun-da-wa and draws it much closer to Binghamton than it is.

Russell drew the Susquehanna as a straight line from Otsego to Binghamton, ignoring the Great Bend into Pennsylvania, so the overlay’s river bows across the real course; Binghamton and Sidney are pinned. NY-12 along the Chenango and NY-7/I-88 along the Susquehanna follow the two trails.
